Michigan greets Christmas morning under low gray clouds and gusty north winds, as winter weather tightens across Marquette and the western Upper Peninsula.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain develops through today. Snow showers increase at times, especially during the morning and afternoon, while pockets of sleet mix in during brief transitions. Temperatures hover in the low to mid 20s, keeping pavement cold and slick.

By later today, 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet are expected across much of the area, with up to 4 inches possible in northern Houghton County. Ice buildup remains light overall, but even a thin glaze can create dangerous driving conditions. Roads may appear wet but freeze quickly, especially on bridges and hills.

Winds gusting over 25 mph add to reduced visibility, blowing snow across open stretches of roadway. Holiday travelers should expect slow conditions, especially during afternoon and early evening travel windows.

Friday brings lingering precipitation. Snow showers continue, occasionally mixing with rain during warmer breaks, before colder air regains control. Conditions briefly ease Friday night, though roads remain icy in shaded areas.

Saturday offers a calmer pause. Clouds linger, but snowfall becomes more scattered, allowing some improvement for travelers. That break will not last long.

Another system arrives Saturday night into Sunday. Rain develops first, then transitions back to snow as colder air pours in. Gusty winds return, pushing wind chills into the teens by Sunday night.

By Monday, blustery snow showers persist, reinforcing winter’s grip on Upper Michigan. Meteorologists continue tracking precipitation types closely, as small temperature changes could worsen ice impacts.

Plan extra time for travel today and through the weekend. Slow down, watch for black ice, and prepare for rapidly changing winter conditions as post-Christmas travel ramps up.
