Michigan’s skies are already shifting, and across Detroit, warm air is fueling a volatile setup that could turn dangerous by the late-day commute. The breeze feels mild now, but clouds are building fast, and storms are lining up just to the west.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a slight risk of severe thunderstorms is in place this afternoon and evening, with damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and hail larger than 1 inch possible. Storms will move quickly, near 45 mph, increasing the risk for sudden impacts.
Across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, temperatures rise into the low 70s before storms develop. Drivers along I-75, I-94, and the Lodge Freeway should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Visibility may drop quickly in heavy rain, and strong wind gusts could make travel hazardous, especially on bridges and open roadways.
Localized flooding is also a concern, especially in urban areas where heavy rain falls in a short time. Avoid low-lying roads and never drive through standing water. Keep phones charged and alerts enabled as conditions evolve.
Rain continues into Wednesday with cooler temperatures near the mid-40s. By Wednesday night, colder air may mix in, bringing a brief chance of light icing north of Detroit before temperatures rise again.
The unsettled pattern lingers into late week with additional rain chances, but warmer air returns heading into early April.
