Michigan greets the morning with bitter cold and quiet skies, but winter is gearing up fast.
Snowflakes begin to fly later today across eastern Upper Michigan, while northern Lower Michigan faces a risk of freezing rain into Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, accumulating snow is expected this evening into early Tuesday, especially across eastern Upper Michigan. Snow-covered roads will likely develop after sunset as temperatures remain well below freezing. Gusty winds may reduce visibility at times.
Farther south, including the Gaylord area, a wintry mix develops tonight. Freezing rain may coat roads, bridges, and power lines before changing to snow toward morning. Ice accumulation is expected to stay light, but even a thin glaze can cause significant travel problems.
Drivers should prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions tonight. Wet pavement can freeze quickly, especially on hills and untreated roads. Plan extra time if traveling and reduce speeds after dark.
Snow chances linger Tuesday, with highs reaching the lower 30s. Any improvement during daylight may be brief. Melted snow can refreeze Tuesday night as colder air settles back in.
Beyond midweek, temperatures remain seasonably cold. Highs hover in the mid-20s to near 30 through Thursday, with mostly cloudy skies. Friday brings a modest warm-up into the low 30s, offering limited relief.
Looking ahead to the 6–10 day outlook, signs point to a gradual warming trend later next week. However, with rivers partially frozen, ice jams could trigger localized flooding if temperatures rise quickly.
For now, winter remains firmly in control across northern Michigan.
