Michigan wakes to steel-gray skies and biting air, with winter tightening its grip across Gaylord and much of northern Michigan.

Snow spreads across the region through today and into Friday, marking a clear shift toward true Winter Weather. Light snow develops early and becomes steadier at times, especially across eastern Upper Michigan and parts of northern Lower Michigan. In the Gaylord area, roads turn snow-covered quickly, and visibility may drop during heavier bursts.

Forecast guidance points to 3 to 6 inches of snow across parts of the region, with locally higher totals possible near Chippewa and Mackinac counties. Gusty winds add to blowing snow, especially on open stretches of roadway. Travel may slow significantly, particularly along rural highways and elevated roads.

Friday brings additional complications. Snow may briefly mix with sleet during the day, while areas south of M-72 could see a glaze of ice. Even small ice amounts can sharply increase crash risk. Drivers should plan extra time and expect slick pavement through Friday evening.

Saturday offers a short lull. Clouds remain, but snowfall becomes lighter and more scattered. Highs climb into the low 30s, providing a brief window for road crews and travelers to catch up.

Conditions change again Sunday. Showers arrive, then transition back to snow as colder air surges in Sunday night. Temperatures drop into the teens, locking in icy patches and refreezing slush. Snow showers continue into Monday, reinforcing hazardous travel conditions for post-Christmas returns.

Meteorologists are monitoring precipitation type closely. Even minor changes could increase ice impacts. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset.

Plan ahead if traveling this weekend. Slow down on snow-covered roads, pack winter essentials, and stay alert as northern Michigan settles into an active late-December winter pattern.
