Michigan — Snowflakes drift sideways along Lake Superior as bitter wind cuts through downtown streets. Visibility drops quickly at times, and the cold bites hard on exposed skin.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, light to occasionally moderate lake-effect snow continues this morning, especially north and west of the city. Blowing snow is possible near the lakeshore. Wind chills in eastern sections of the Upper Peninsula have fallen as low as 25 below zero, creating dangerous conditions early.
Temperatures hover near 5 degrees this morning at Sawyer International Airport. Northwest winds around 10 to 15 mph, with higher gusts, keep wind chills well below zero. Drivers should expect slick patches and sudden visibility drops on U.S. 41 and M-28, especially during heavier snow bands.
Snow showers gradually taper later today, though flurries may linger. Highs struggle to reach the mid-teens. Even brief melting can refreeze quickly, raising the risk of flash freezing on untreated roads and sidewalks.
Conditions improve slightly Saturday as clouds thin and winds ease. Sunshine helps highs climb into the low 20s, though it still feels cold. Saturday night turns clear and quiet, allowing temperatures to fall back into the single digits.
Sunday brings another shift. Clouds increase, and a chance of snow showers returns by afternoon. Snow becomes more likely Sunday night, with minor accumulations possible before early Monday. Travel impacts could develop again as temperatures fall into the teens.
Looking ahead, colder-than-normal air remains locked over the Great Lakes into early February. With Lake Superior largely iced over, cold air holds firm, allowing periodic snow chances to continue.
Limit time outdoors today, cover exposed skin, and plan extra travel time when snow bands intensify.
