Michigan – Loose branches sway and trash cans rattle as strong southwest winds sweep across southeast Michigan early this morning. The air feels unusually mild for January, but winter is already lining up its next move for Detroit.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory through late afternoon. Wind gusts between 40 and 45 mph are expected as a cold front moves through. High-profile vehicles may struggle on exposed roadways, especially along I-94, I-75, and I-96. Unsecured outdoor items could be blown around, and isolated power outages remain possible.

Rain develops through the morning, mixing with gusty winds that lower visibility at times. A brief heavier downpour cannot be ruled out, but severe storms remain unlikely. Temperatures peak in the upper 50s early, then fall steadily behind the front.

Conditions quiet briefly tonight as winds ease and temperatures drop near freezing. Saturday turns colder and cloudier. Rain may mix with snow by afternoon, especially north and west of the city. Little accumulation is expected during the day, but it sets the stage for a wintry weekend.

Saturday night into Sunday brings the most notable winter signal. Snow showers may develop, producing a couple inches of accumulation in parts of southeast Michigan. While totals remain uncertain, even light snow could create slick roads and reduced visibility, especially during early travel hours.

Sunday stays cold with highs near the low 30s. Any melting during daylight could refreeze quickly after sunset, increasing the risk for black ice on bridges and untreated surfaces.

Meteorologists continue tracking the evolving system as colder air deepens across the Great Lakes.

Secure loose items today. Use caution in strong winds. Prepare for winter driving conditions returning this weekend.
