Gaylord, Michigan – Severe weather could rattle parts of northern Michigan Wednesday afternoon and evening as thunderstorms move across the region, bringing gusty winds and the chance for hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop through the evening across Emmet, Otsego, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, and surrounding counties. A few of these storms could turn strong or marginally severe, with the main hazards being 40+ mph winds and small hail.

Cities like Gaylord, Petoskey, and Alpena may see brief downpours and lightning, particularly between 4 p.m. and midnight. The risk stretches into parts of Eastern Upper Michigan, including Mackinac Island and Bois Blanc Island. Motorists are urged to watch for rapidly changing weather on U.S. 131 and M-32.

Saturday night into Sunday also brings another chance for thunderstorms, some of which may be stronger depending on daytime heating and moisture return.

While official spotter activation isn’t expected, the weather service encourages residents to report any hail or wind damage.

Storm threats taper off late tonight, but summer heat returns Friday with highs in the low 90s. Additional alerts may be issued ahead of the weekend.
