DETROIT, Mich. – Drivers in metro Detroit may face slick roads and reduced visibility Thursday afternoon as thunderstorms move into the region. The National Weather Service warns that heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning could impact travel on major routes including I-75, I-94, and M-10 after 2 p.m. Motorists should allow extra travel time and avoid flooded underpasses.

According to the National Weather Service, showers are likely Thursday with storms most probable in the afternoon. Temperatures will reach near 70 degrees, but strong wind gusts up to 21 mph could create hazardous driving conditions. Rainfall totals may approach half an inch in some neighborhoods. North winds Thursday night will help clear skies as temperatures dip near 51 degrees.

Friday brings a break in the wet weather, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 68. By Saturday and Sunday, southeast Michigan turns warmer and brighter, making for a favorable Labor Day weekend. Outdoor gatherings, barbecues, and road trips should benefit from the calmer pattern, though cool nighttime lows in the low 50s may call for jackets.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture Thursday morning and monitor weather alerts for storm timing. Keep devices charged in case of power outages and drive cautiously in downpours.

Conditions improve by late Friday and continue through early next week. Additional advisories remain possible if Thursday’s storms intensify.
