Detroit, MI – Thunderstorms packing gusty winds and bursts of heavy rain are expected to sweep through southeast Michigan, including Detroit, beginning Thursday afternoon and continuing on and off through early next week. Commuters could see sudden downpours and wind gusts topping 40 mph along and west of I-75, potentially causing travel delays and slick roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, embedded thunderstorms will develop Thursday afternoon and evening, with the most active periods likely to hit after 2 p.m. Though severe weather is not anticipated, forecasters warn that the strongest storms could still down tree limbs and produce locally heavy rainfall. Additional rounds of showers and storms are expected on Friday and again on Tuesday.

Cities from Ann Arbor and Livonia to Flint and Saginaw should prepare for quick changes in weather conditions, especially during afternoon commutes. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and check for any rapid flooding on roads during heavy rainfall bursts. Power outages are not widespread but could occur if isolated strong winds develop.

Stay weather aware through the weekend as showers and thunderstorms may redevelop, with the threat for gusty winds persisting into Tuesday. The National Weather Service may issue updated advisories if conditions worsen.
