Detroit, Michigan – Drivers across southeast Michigan should brace for intense thunderstorms Friday afternoon, with winds topping 60 mph and flooding possible by 5 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, severe storms will move through the region beginning late Friday, with the strongest cells capable of dumping heavy rain and producing damaging wind gusts. A Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect for Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, along with much of southeast Michigan. The most severe activity is expected after 5 p.m., impacting both commutes and local events.

Localized flooding is a major concern, especially along low-lying roads and highways like I-94, I-96, and M-10. Gusts up to 60 mph could also lead to scattered power outages. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel late Friday and secure outdoor items now.

Saturday brings relief with clear skies and a high of 85°F, while Sunday stays dry and warmer, reaching 89°F. But storms are likely to return late Sunday night into Monday evening, possibly with more thunderstorms after 8 p.m.

Prepare now: charge electronics, clear drains, and have a storm safety kit ready. Spotter activation may be needed Friday evening.

More alerts could be issued Friday morning as updated storm data comes in. Stay tuned to NWS Detroit and local news for changes.
