Michigan starts the morning locked in deep winter across the Upper Peninsula. Light flakes drift across dark streets, and the air burns exposed skin within minutes.

Temperatures in Marquette sit near 2 below zero early this morning. Northwest winds push wind chills down to 15 to nearly 20 below zero, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors. According to the National Weather Service, very cold wind chills are expected again tonight, with values dipping near 20 below in parts of central Upper Michigan.

Lake-effect snow showers continue today, especially from Marquette west toward Alger County. Snow falls lightly at times, but bursts can reduce visibility quickly near Lake Superior. Gusty winds lift loose snow, causing patchy blowing snow along US-41 and M-28. Drivers should slow down and expect sudden whiteouts near open stretches.

Despite occasional sunshine breaks, temperatures struggle to recover. Highs reach only around 11 degrees this afternoon. Sidewalks and untreated roads stay slick, and flash freezing remains a concern as snow briefly melts and refreezes.

Snow chances linger tonight and into Friday. Additional lake-effect bands may drop light accumulations, with winds keeping conditions blustery. Friday’s high climbs to about 16 degrees, still well below normal for late January.

Saturday offers a brief pause. Mostly sunny skies help temperatures rise near 21 degrees, improving travel conditions during daylight. Clear skies Saturday night allow temperatures to fall again.

By Sunday, clouds increase and snow showers become more likely late. Highs reach the upper 20s, but any snow could quickly coat roads after sunset. Meteorologists continue tracking cold air anchored over the Great Lakes, with lakes increasingly frozen and capable of sustaining lake-effect patterns.

Limit time outdoors today. Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and check road conditions before traveling.
