Marquette, Mich. – Strong thunderstorms packing damaging winds and large hail could sweep across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula late tonight into early Saturday morning, prompting alerts from the National Weather Service.
According to the NWS office in Marquette, a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather is in place from about 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Saturday, mainly affecting the interior western UP, including Iron Mountain, Houghton, and Marquette. Forecasters say confidence is moderate to high that storms will move through the region, though exact timing could vary.
Winds could exceed 60 mph, and there’s up to a 29% chance of hail at least 1 inch in diameter in some locations. Communities such as Escanaba, Ironwood, and Menominee should prepare for possible power outages and tree damage. Drivers on U.S. 2 and M-28 are urged to stay alert for debris and low visibility overnight.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts. While this system is not expected to last past Saturday morning, additional storms are possible through the weekend.
