GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Strong fall storms are sweeping across western and central Michigan this morning, bringing gusty winds, lightning, and drenching rain to the I-96 corridor before conditions calm heading into the new week. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids warns that scattered thunderstorms could deliver gusts near 50 mph and hail up to the size of a penny, creating hazardous travel from Kalamazoo to Lansing.

According to the National Weather Service, the greatest storm risk will persist through this evening, especially for areas east of U.S. 131. Locally heavy rainfall could lead to brief ponding on roads and reduced visibility for drivers along I-94 and M-6. Power outages are possible near lakeshore communities, where stronger gusts could down small limbs. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor decorations and delay travel until conditions improve.

Showers are expected to taper Sunday morning as cooler, drier air pushes into the region. Temperatures will dip into the low 40s Sunday night before a brighter, milder Monday with highs near 60 degrees. Sunshine will dominate early next week, marking a much-needed break for fall festivals and pumpkin patch outings ahead of late October’s next cool-down.

According to forecasters, another round of showers may return by midweek, with chilly nights hinting at the season’s first frost potential later next weekend. Until then, motorists should remain cautious through tonight’s final storm band and take extra care near slick intersections and rural roadways.
