Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan residents should prepare for the possibility of severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon through evening, as storms are expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, the primary threats include large hail up to 1 inch in diameter, wind gusts reaching 60 mph or higher, and locally heavy rainfall. A low probability also exists for an isolated tornado during this period.
Areas under a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) include Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor, Lansing, and much of the lower peninsula. The NWS encourages residents to stay weather-aware and ready to act quickly if warnings are issued. Outdoor plans may need adjusting, and securing loose outdoor items is recommended ahead of the approaching storm window.
The timing of the storms coincides with peak weekend travel and outdoor activities, increasing potential risks for motorists and eventgoers. While March often brings fluctuating weather to Michigan, this system stands out for its strong wind potential and hail threat.
Officials will continue to monitor the evolving system and advise the public to check local alerts regularly for updates. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as the storm window approaches.
