Gaylord, Mich. – Strong thunderstorms are sweeping through northern Michigan this morning, bringing a high risk of damaging wind gusts, large hail, and intense lightning from now through 3 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, multiple rounds of severe storms are expected, including a potentially intense line developing late this morning into early afternoon. Cities under the highest threat include Sault Ste. Marie, St. Ignace, Gaylord, Petoskey, Traverse City, and Alpena.

Residents across Emmet, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, and Otsego counties should brace for frequent lightning strikes and wind gusts strong enough to down trees or power lines. US-131 and M-32 may see hazardous driving conditions, especially during peak storm windows. Outdoor plans should be postponed and loose items secured.

This system is part of a wider instability pattern tracking through the Upper Midwest. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 risk zone for much of northern Lower Michigan, urging residents to stay alert.

Warnings remain in effect until 3 p.m. Further updates may be issued if storms intensify or redevelop later this afternoon.
