Grand Rapids, MI – A line of severe thunderstorms is expected to sweep across Lower Michigan Sunday afternoon and evening, with the greatest impacts forecast between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. The southern half of the state, including cities such as Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Detroit, is under heightened risk.

According to the National Weather Service Grand Rapids, the primary threats include damaging winds over 60 mph and large hail. Areas along and south of I-96 fall under a Slight to Enhanced Risk, with a Moderate Risk zone stretching near Detroit and the southeastern corner of the state. Forecasters warn that brief tornadoes are also possible, especially in areas experiencing the strongest storm cells.

Travel disruptions are likely during the afternoon commute. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, remain indoors during active storms, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates. Power outages are possible due to falling trees and power lines.

This storm system follows a stretch of milder spring weather, making this one of the season’s first widespread severe threats. Officials recommend preparing emergency kits and reviewing severe weather plans ahead of the storms.
