Gaylord, Mich. – Scattered severe thunderstorms could slam into northern Michigan between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and dangerous lightning across several counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a line of strong storms is expected to move west to east through the region during the late morning and early afternoon. The greatest risk areas include Sault Ste. Marie, Petoskey, Gaylord, Traverse City, Cadillac, and Alpena. Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, with a level 2 (slight risk) designation covering most of the region.
Travelers on US-131 and M-32 should expect rapidly changing weather and possible debris on roadways. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates. Power outages may occur if winds reach expected speeds.
This is the first widespread severe weather event for northern Michigan this June and could still shift in intensity. The National Weather Service emphasizes that additional updates are likely.
