Grand Rapids, Mich. – Severe thunderstorms could bring damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall across West Michigan this afternoon through 10 p.m., with the greatest threat focused along and north of I-96.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, storms will begin developing around 2 p.m., peaking in intensity near a frontal boundary west of US 131 later this evening. The highest risk zone stretches from south of Lansing to Kalamazoo, where isolated wind gusts may reach 60 mph.

Localized downpours could lead to ponding on roadways, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Drivers should watch for reduced visibility and slick conditions during the evening commute. Lightning and strong wind bursts may impact outdoor plans and power lines.

Communities including Holland, Grand Rapids, and Mount Pleasant remain under a Marginal Risk for severe weather, with enhanced activity near Jackson and Battle Creek. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and charge mobile devices ahead of any outages.

Storm activity is expected to taper off after 10 p.m., but additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
