Grand Rapids, Michigan – A line of strong thunderstorms could sweep across Lower Michigan after 8 p.m. Sunday, bringing the potential for 60 mph wind gusts that could down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, parts of central and western Lower Michigan sit under a Level 2 of 5 “Slight Risk” for severe weather Sunday evening into early Monday morning. Storms are expected to develop ahead of an approaching cold front before moving east across the state.

The main threat will be damaging straight-line winds, though large hail and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out as the storms organize into a line.

Cities including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Alma, and Mount Pleasant could see storms pass between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Areas along major travel corridors such as I-96, US-131, and US-127 may experience sudden downpours, gusty winds, and reduced visibility as the storms move through.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor objects and charge mobile devices ahead of the evening storms. Since the system arrives after dark, having multiple ways to receive warnings—including weather alerts on phones or NOAA weather radios—is especially important.

The storm line should move east of Michigan by early Monday morning, though additional advisories could be issued if stronger storms develop Sunday evening.
