Marquette, MI – A messy mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain is set to move into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula tonight, raising concerns for slick roads and changing travel conditions through early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, precipitation will begin as rain this evening before mixing with snow and pockets of freezing rain overnight, especially across northern and eastern portions of the U.P. Temperatures hovering near 30 degrees will allow for light ice accumulation on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces.

Cities including Marquette, Munising, and Newberry could see rapidly changing road conditions overnight into the early Friday commute. While snowfall totals through Friday morning are expected to remain light, even a thin glaze of ice could create hazardous travel along US-41 and M-28.

Conditions remain mostly cloudy Friday, with highs ranging from the mid-30s in the north and east to near 50 degrees closer to the Wisconsin border.

Attention then shifts to the weekend, where another system may bring accumulating snow or additional freezing rain. There is about a 30% chance of more than 3 inches of wet snow, mainly Saturday night.

Residents should prepare for slippery travel tonight and monitor updates as the weekend system develops.
