Gaylord, Michigan – Slick roads could develop overnight across northern Michigan as temperatures dip below freezing and a mix of rain and snow moves in, creating a brief window for ice accumulation before the Friday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, light freezing rain is possible late tonight into early Friday across the eastern Upper Peninsula and far northern Lower Michigan. Overnight lows will fall between 22 and 30 degrees, allowing a thin glaze of ice to form before temperatures climb above freezing by mid-morning Friday.

Communities including Sault Ste. Marie, Petoskey, Gaylord, and Alpena could see reduced traction on bridges and overpasses, especially before sunrise. While ice amounts are expected to remain light, even a thin layer can create hazardous travel on untreated roads. Drivers along I-75 and US-131 should use caution during early travel hours.

Conditions improve temps as highs rise into the upper 40s, melting any lingering ice. Another round of precipitation arrives late Saturday into Sunday, with a mix of rain and snow and temperatures ranging from the low 30s to low 50s across the region.

Residents are urged to allow extra travel time Friday morning and monitor updates as additional advisories remain possible into the weekend.
