Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents might get one more dazzling sky show tonight as the Northern Lights could make another appearance, thanks to an ongoing solar storm that has pushed auroral activity unusually far south across the United States.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, skies will remain partly cloudy tonight, offering occasional clear windows for aurora viewing — especially north of M-72 and into the Upper Peninsula, where light pollution is minimal. The best chance to catch the glow will be after sunset through the early overnight hours, facing north toward Lake Superior.

The same system bringing potential aurora visibility will also keep rain and snow showers in the picture. Forecasters say precipitation may mix with snow early this morning and again late tonight, though no accumulation is expected. Thursday brings scattered rain and snow chances mainly north, followed by a mostly sunny and mild Friday with highs near 50°F.

Clouds return Saturday with new showers developing by evening, and a rain/snow mix likely Sunday as cooler air settles in.

If skies clear, tonight could be the last strong aurora viewing opportunity before clouds and moisture dominate the weekend forecast.
