Michigan wakes under a brittle gray sky as cold air presses in from the north. Exhaust hangs in the air, wind cuts across parking lots, and every step crunches against frozen pavement.

Western Michigan remains locked in harsh winter weather this morning. According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, temperatures hover in the lower teens with wind chills near 5 below zero. Cold conditions continue through the morning hours, keeping roads icy and increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.

In Grand Rapids, highs struggle to reach 20 degrees today under mostly sunny skies. North winds keep the air biting, especially along US-131, I-196, and surface streets that saw melting earlier in the week. Even brief sunshine can trigger daytime thawing, followed by flash freezing after sunset.

Attention shifts quickly to the next round of winter weather. Snow chances increase late Sunday into Monday. The National Weather Service indicates snow showers become likely Monday morning, with the highest coverage before early afternoon. While accumulations appear light, even a half inch can snarl the morning commute due to cold pavement and reduced visibility.

Sunday offers only a short break. Temperatures rebound slightly into the mid-20s, but clouds increase late, signaling the next system. Monday stays cold with highs near 29 and gusty winds adding to the chill. Any snow that falls will stick quickly.

Looking ahead through the first week of February, winter remains firmly in control. Tuesday and Wednesday stay mostly cloudy with highs in the mid-20s. Additional snow chances return later in the week, keeping travel conditions unpredictable across Western Michigan.

The Great Lakes remain heavily iced, reinforcing colder air and prolonging winter patterns across the region. Roads may look dry at times, but hidden ice remains a threat.
