Gaylord, Mich. – A smoky sky is hanging over northern Michigan late Monday morning, creating a hazy backdrop across Gaylord as Canadian wildfire smoke continues to affect air quality. While sunshine will help temperatures climb into the lower 80s, conditions are expected to change by late today as showers and thunderstorms begin developing across the region.
According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), an Air Quality Alert remains in effect statewide through Monday because of elevated fine particulate pollution from Canadian wildfire smoke. Air quality ranges from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups across much of Lower Michigan to Unhealthy in parts of northern Michigan. Sensitive groups should avoid prolonged outdoor activity, while everyone should limit strenuous exercise if smoke becomes thicker.
The National Weather Service says patchy smoke will gradually improve during the afternoon as southerly winds develop. High temperatures are expected to reach around 80 degrees, with southwest winds between 5 and 15 mph and gusts approaching 25 mph.
Meteorologists are also tracking a developing round of showers and thunderstorms later today. Rain chances increase through the afternoon before becoming widespread this evening and into the night. Drivers along I-75, M-32 and US-131 should be prepared for changing visibility, wet pavement and locally gusty winds during heavier showers.
By Tuesday, additional showers and thunderstorms remain likely before cooler Canadian air arrives. Wednesday brings sunshine and a much cooler afternoon with highs only near 68 degrees, offering a noticeable break from the recent warmth.
Long-range outlooks continue to suggest temperatures may trend above seasonal averages later next week, but the immediate focus remains on smoke today and changing weather through Tuesday.
