Michigan – Wind rattles windows and bends trees across southeast Michigan as a powerful system sweeps through during the heart of holiday travel. Loose debris skids across wet pavement, and visibility drops quickly when snow bursts push through.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect across the Detroit metro and surrounding counties through Monday evening. According to the National Weather Service, southwest to west winds increase steadily today, with frequent gusts between 45 and 60 mph. Power outages are possible as tree limbs and lines are stressed. High-profile vehicles will struggle, especially along I-75, I-94, and I-96.

Rain showers early today transition to snow showers by late morning. Snow totals stay light, generally an inch or less, but brief snow squalls could rapidly reduce visibility. Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly when heavier bursts move through. Drivers should slow down and be prepared for sudden whiteouts.

By afternoon, temperatures fall sharply. Wet roads may freeze as Arctic air surges in behind the system. This rapid cool-down raises the risk of flash freezing, especially on bridges and untreated roads. Even minor snow accumulation could create slick conditions during the evening commute.

Tonight stays blustery and colder. Winds remain strong, and scattered snow showers continue. Lows drop into the lower 20s, allowing icy patches to persist into Tuesday morning. Dress for biting wind chills if heading out.

Tuesday turns colder but quieter. Highs struggle to reach the upper 20s under mostly cloudy skies. Another round of snow chances arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday, with additional light accumulation possible. Temperatures remain locked in winter mode heading into New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Day 2026 stays cold but calmer. Sunshine returns, with highs near the low 20s. Travel improves, but lingering ice remains possible in shaded areas.
