Gaylord, MI – Lake effect snow will persist across northern Michigan through Friday morning, with the heaviest snowfall expected east of the Grand Traverse Bay region tonight.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Gaylord, snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour are possible. The Grand Traverse area and western Kalkaska County are expected to receive 6-8 inches of snow, with localized higher amounts. Accumulation will taper off westward by morning.

Roads remain hazardous as snow-covered surfaces and reduced visibility create dangerous travel conditions across the region. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and allow extra time for travel.

The lake effect snow is driven by intense northwesterly flow bands, which are expected to weaken by early Friday. Residents should stay alert for additional updates and monitor road conditions.

Temperatures will remain seasonably cold, compounding the risk of icy roads. Travelers heading through northwest lower Michigan are advised to exercise caution, especially in areas near the shoreline.
