Lansing, MI – Michigan residents are urged to prepare for a surge of Arctic air that will move into the state beginning Saturday, November 30, and linger through the first week of December, bringing the coldest weather of the season so far.

According to the National Weather Service, a strong Arctic front is forecast to push across the Great Lakes region this weekend, delivering widespread freezing temperatures and dangerous wind chills. The Climate Prediction Center reports a 60–75% chance of below-normal temperatures across Michigan, with the most intense cold centered over northern and central portions of the state.

Drivers along I-75 and I-94 are warned to expect icy road conditions, blowing snow, and sharp temperature drops beginning late Saturday. Early morning commutes Monday and Tuesday could see wind chills below zero, particularly across northern Michigan and along the Lake Huron shoreline.

This early December blast marks the first major Arctic outbreak of the winter season, signaling a transition into prolonged cold for much of the Midwest. Meanwhile, southern regions of the U.S. are forecast to remain warmer than average, creating a dramatic national temperature contrast.

Motorists are encouraged to check local travel advisories, carry emergency kits, and allow extra travel time during the freeze. Residents should also protect pets, pipes, and heating systems as temperatures plunge below freezing statewide.
