Gaylord, MI – A steady gray sky and crisp, frosty air set the tone across northern Michigan this morning as the next winter wave approaches. The quiet start won’t last long — snow is returning to the region this afternoon, marking the beginning of several wintry days ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, accumulating snow will begin later today and continue through Sunday morning, bringing 1 to 3 inches of fresh accumulation across northern Lower and eastern Upper Michigan. Roads will likely become slick by evening, especially across M-32, I-75, and U.S. 131 corridors where visibility could briefly drop in heavier bursts.

Snow chances remain through Sunday, followed by another round of light lake-effect bands into early Monday. Gusty northwest winds may cause blowing snow in open areas, particularly near Gaylord, Petoskey, and Cheboygan. Untreated roads could turn icy again at night as temperatures dip into the teens.

Travelers are urged to drive with caution, leave extra space, and plan for slower commutes. Meteorologists warn that even minor snowfalls can create hazardous travel, especially as moisture refreezes on bridges and shaded roads.

Looking Ahead:

  • Sunday: Cloudy, flurries possible, high 22°F, low 3°F.
  • Monday: Partly sunny, high 21°F, low 14°F.
  • Tuesday: Snow showers, high 28°F.
  • Wednesday: Snow likely, high 30°F.
  • Thursday: Cloudy, highs near 25°F.

Looking toward Dec. 11–17, long-range models suggest another string of Great Lakes clippers, which could deliver heavier lake-effect snow and more travel disruptions as the region gears up for mid-December and early holiday travel.
