DETROIT, Mich. – Dangerous marine conditions are set to develop across Michigan waters Friday, with forecasters warning of gale-force winds, high waves, and strong currents that could endanger boaters and swimmers.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, gale warnings are in effect for both northern and southern Lake Huron from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Winds from the southwest could reach 40 knots, producing waves as high as 20 feet across open waters.

Smaller lakes will not be spared. A Small Craft Advisory is posted for Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair during the same period, with conditions hazardous to boaters in and around Detroit and Monroe County. Beach Hazards Statements are also in effect Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. for Huron, Sanilac, St. Clair, and Monroe counties, where strong currents and crashing waves could pull swimmers into deeper water.

Officials advise avoiding unnecessary boating and swimming Friday, keeping a safe distance from breakwalls and piers, and securing vessels ahead of the storm.

Hazards are expected to ease Friday night, though additional advisories could be issued if winds remain strong into the weekend.
