Detroit, MI – The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a Gale Warning for nearly all of Lake Huron, in effect through tonight, Sunday, October 19, as strong winds and high waves develop across the Great Lakes region.

According to the National Weather Service, south to southeast winds of 25 to 30 knots will shift northwest later today behind a passing cold front, producing gusts of 35 to 40 knots across much of the lake. The warning begins at 8 a.m. for southern and central Lake Huron and expands northward by midafternoon.

Waves will range from 8 to 14 feet, with maximum waves up to 18 feet possible over open waters. Boaters are urged to remain in port, as dangerous conditions are expected for all vessels.

A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect for Saginaw Bay, Lake St. Clair, and nearshore Lake Erie waters, where winds and waves will remain elevated through early Monday morning.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by late Monday as winds subside.
