Gaylord, MI – Mariners across northern Lake Huron and eastern Lake Superior are being urged to stay in port today as strong northwest winds are expected to create dangerous wave and wind conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord.
A Gale Warning is in effect from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday for multiple marine zones, including Whitefish Bay, the St. Marys River, and coastal waters from the Mackinac Bridge to Sturgeon Point and Presque Isle Light.
Forecasters report northwest winds up to 35 knots and waves reaching 10 feet in open waters. The St. Marys River may experience waves up to 5 feet, posing significant risks to small craft.
The NWS warns that these gale-force winds could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility, especially near exposed points and channels. Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port, seek safe harbor, and secure all equipment before conditions worsen.
Winds are expected to ease later tonight as the system moves east, with calmer conditions returning by Thursday morning.
