Grand Rapids, MI – Drivers across central, south-central, southwest, and west-central Michigan should prepare for slippery travel conditions Friday as freezing rain develops during the morning and midday hours, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory.

According to the National Weather Service, mixed precipitation — including freezing rain — is expected from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, with ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch possible. While ice amounts are forecast to remain light, even a thin glaze can create hazardous driving conditions.

Forecasters say freezing rain is most likely after 5 a.m. Friday, continuing through the morning hours before tapering during the afternoon as temperatures rise into the mid-30s. Winds from the southeast could gust over 25 mph, further complicating travel conditions.

Areas most likely to be affected include communities near Grand Rapids, Lansing, Big Rapids, Alma, Mount Pleasant, Jackson, and Cadillac, where untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses could become slick quickly.

The National Weather Service warns that hazardous road conditions could impact the Friday morning commute, especially on secondary roads and elevated surfaces. While widespread power outages are not expected, localized outages remain possible if ice accumulates on trees or power lines.

Conditions are expected to improve Friday night as temperatures fall into the low 20s and precipitation ends. Saturday looks mostly dry with highs near 36 degrees, though additional rain or snow showers may return later in the weekend.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Motorists should continue monitoring updated forecasts and check road conditions through Michigan’s 511 system before traveling.
