Cheboygan, MI – A wintry mix of freezing rain is expected to create hazardous conditions across parts of northern Michigan starting Friday evening, with impacts lasting into Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Saturday for Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle counties, as well as Beaver Island and surrounding islands. Up to two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation is forecast, posing a risk to roads, bridges, and power lines.
Officials warn the greatest threats include slick roadways, power outages, and tree damage. The Friday evening commute may be impacted, especially in low-lying areas and across elevated surfaces such as overpasses.
Residents are urged to use caution while traveling, reduce speeds, and prepare for possible power interruptions. Sidewalks, steps, and driveways may also become treacherous overnight, increasing the risk of injury from slips and falls.
This ice event is expected to conclude by late morning Saturday, but lingering slick spots may persist into the early afternoon. Drivers are encouraged to check updated road conditions before heading out and delay unnecessary travel if possible.
