Gaylord, MI – A mix of freezing rain and wintry precipitation is expected to impact northern Michigan beginning Friday night, bringing potential travel hazards across the region.

According to the US National Weather Service in Gaylord, light snow showers will end tonight, followed by a period of calm weather midweek. However, a more active system is forecast to arrive Friday afternoon into the evening, delivering freezing rain and sleet to much of northern lower Michigan and parts of the Upper Peninsula.

The system is expected to start late Friday and continue through the weekend. Areas with the highest probability for freezing rain include counties from Cadillac northward to Petoskey and east toward Alpena. These regions fall within the zone of increased ice accumulation risk, potentially leading to slick roads and difficult travel conditions.

Residents are urged to prepare for slippery conditions by monitoring local forecasts, limiting non-essential travel during active precipitation, and keeping emergency kits in vehicles. Power outages may be possible if ice accumulates on power lines and tree limbs.

Temperatures across the region are expected to range from the low 20s to mid-30s through the weekend, keeping conditions favorable for prolonged icing. Drivers and residents should stay updated on weather advisories as the system develops.
