Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents should prepare for a sharp temperature drop tonight as a Freeze Watch takes effect across most of the region, according to the US National Weather Service in Gaylord. After a mild, sunny day with highs in the mid-50s, conditions will turn much colder overnight, leading to widespread freezing temperatures and potential frost along the lakeshore.

According to the National Weather Service, low temperatures are expected to range from 22–29°F in interior areas and 32–40°F along the coast. The agency noted this could bring the first frost of the season to coastal communities, while inland areas may experience a hard freeze.

The Freeze Watch remains in effect through 9 a.m. Thursday, covering nearly all of northern Michigan except the islands. Clear skies and calm winds are expected to accelerate the overnight cooling, increasing the likelihood of frost formation.

Residents are advised to protect sensitive plants, outdoor plumbing, and any temperature-sensitive items ahead of the freeze. Farmers and gardeners should take precautions to prevent crop damage.

Daytime conditions Wednesday will remain seasonable and sunny, with highs between 51–59°F before temperatures tumble again after sunset.
