Detroit, Michigan – Light accumulating snow and sharply colder air are expected across southeast Michigan tonight and again Wednesday, creating slick travel conditions and bitter wind chills as the region heads into the New Year.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, light snow is expected this evening and again on Wednesday, with accumulations up to 1 inch possible with each round. Snowfall is expected to be light but persistent at times, particularly during the late morning to evening hours.

Temperatures today are forecast to reach the mid-20s, before colder air settles in tonight. Wednesday will remain cold, with highs generally in the mid to upper 20s, followed by the coldest temperatures of the week arriving on New Year’s Day.

Forecasters say New Year’s Day highs will struggle to reach the upper teens to lower 20s, with morning lows dipping into the single digits. Wind chills early Thursday are expected to fall near zero, especially during the morning hours before gradually improving later in the day.

While snowfall amounts are not expected to be heavy, slick road conditions may develop, particularly during the evening and overnight hours when temperatures drop and untreated surfaces freeze. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads are expected to be most affected.

Additional light snow chances continue into Friday and Saturday, though probabilities decrease heading into the weekend. Temperatures are forecast to remain below normal through the end of the week, prolonging icy conditions.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds during snowfall, and use caution during early morning commutes. Residents planning outdoor New Year’s activities should dress in layers and limit exposure during the coldest periods.
