GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across central and western Michigan through 11 a.m. EST Saturday, as dangerously low wind chills persist, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said wind chills across the region are expected to range between 25 and 30 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. At those temperatures, frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes, and prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia.

The warning covers portions of west central, southwest, central and south-central Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, Ludington, Big Rapids, Mount Pleasant, Ionia, Greenville, Fremont, Reed City and Alma.

In addition to health risks, officials warned that the extended stretch of freezing temperatures could cause water pipes to freeze or rupture, particularly in unprotected buildings.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, wear layered clothing including hats and gloves if travel is necessary, and keep pets indoors. Officials also encouraged residents to check on elderly neighbors and family members and to use space heaters safely, cautioning against using grills or generators indoors.

Temperatures are expected to gradually moderate later Saturday as the Arctic air mass begins to move east.
