Marquette, Mich. – Sunshine and warm temperatures may look inviting across Upper Michigan, but extremely dry air is raising fire concerns as October begins Wednesday. Residents should use caution with any outdoor burning or spark-prone equipment as humidity levels fall into the low 30% range.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a stretch of calm, clear conditions will persist through midweek, keeping the region dry. Fire crews warn that low humidity and light winds create the potential for brush fires, especially in forested areas along U.S. Highway 41 and M-28. Officials urge residents to avoid campfires and dispose of smoking materials carefully.

Daytime highs will climb into the 70s through Thursday, while nights cool to the low 50s. This pattern favors comfortable days for travel, yard work, or fall activities but also prolongs the risk of fire spread in grassy or wooded terrain. Marquette, Houghton, and Ironwood will share in the warmup, with skies staying mostly sunny.

Wednesday will start partly sunny with highs near 68 before sunshine returns Thursday. By Friday, a chance of showers moves in, offering some relief to the ongoing dry stretch.

Fire officials stress vigilance this week, reminding residents that even short-lived sparks can quickly ignite dry brush. No major storms are expected, but conditions remain favorable for fire activity until wetter weather arrives.
