Saginaw, Michigan – A potentially disruptive winter storm could impact Michigan from Wednesday, Jan. 14, through Friday, Jan. 17, with the highest confidence for severe winter weather focused near Lake Huron and the Thumb region.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, severe winter storm probabilities are highest across eastern Michigan near Lake Huron, particularly across the Thumb, where lake-enhanced snowfall could significantly increase accumulations. The developing storm system is expected to track across the Great Lakes, drawing in colder air and creating favorable conditions for persistent snow bands downwind of Lake Huron.

The greatest travel concerns are expected along Interstate 75, M-53, M-25, and portions of I-69, where snow-covered roads and reduced visibility could develop quickly. Communities including Bad Axe, Port Austin, Caro, and areas near Saginaw Bay may experience periods of heavier snowfall, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Gusty winds could lead to blowing and drifting snow, further complicating travel across open farmland and exposed roadways.

Elsewhere across Michigan, including parts of the northern Lower Peninsula and interior sections of the state, winter weather impacts remain possible but more variable. Farther south toward Detroit and Ann Arbor, precipitation type may fluctuate depending on storm track and temperature trends, though forecasters caution that colder air arriving late could still bring snow into the region.

Residents in the Thumb and eastern Michigan are urged to prepare now by monitoring forecasts, checking vehicles, and planning for difficult travel later this week. MDOT advises allowing extra time and watching for rapidly changing conditions once snow begins.

Forecast confidence is expected to increase as the storm approaches. Winter storm watches, advisories, or warnings are likely, especially for the Thumb and lakeshore counties near Lake Huron, as details on snowfall intensity and duration become clearer.
