Grand Rapids, Mich. – Thunderstorms moving across southern and central Michigan Monday could bring wind gusts up to 60 mph and dangerous lightning through 8 p.m., prompting safety warnings across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, storms are expected between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., mainly affecting cities like Detroit, Lansing, Kalamazoo, and Jackson. While the severe weather risk is marginal, localized damage from downed branches or power lines remains possible, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Winds may top 60 mph in isolated cells, and forecasters warn of heavy downpours and lightning with any storm. Residents in areas including Saginaw, Grand Rapids, and Coldwater are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid sheltering under trees. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” NWS officials reminded.
Drivers should use caution on I-94, I-96, and US-131, where visibility may drop quickly in heavy rain. Power outages and minor road flooding can’t be ruled out.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by 8 p.m., but additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
