Detroit, Michigan – A warm and sunny Labor Day weekend will quickly give way to a sharp September cooldown across Michigan. Drivers and holiday travelers should enjoy dry roads Monday, but by midweek, cooler air and showers will bring a taste of fall.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit, highs will climb into the upper 70s through Tuesday, but temperatures begin to tumble by Wednesday. Chilly nighttime lows could dip into the 40s in outlying suburbs, while scattered showers may slow morning commutes along I-94 and I-75.

Labor Day itself looks nearly perfect with bright skies and highs near 78. Residents planning backyard cookouts or trips to Belle Isle and Lake St. Clair should expect calm conditions and comfortable weather. However, the first push of fall air will sweep in midweek, signaling the end of the recent summerlike stretch.

Wednesday brings the biggest change. Showers are expected after 2 p.m., with heavier rainfall possible overnight into early Thursday. Roadways may turn slick for early drivers, and MDOT urges caution on highways, particularly near construction zones. By Thursday, daytime highs may struggle to break the upper 60s, a full 10 to 15 degrees below average for early September.

The cooler pattern is expected to linger. National outlook maps show Michigan locked under a broad zone of “below normal” temperatures through the second week of September. That means more sweatshirt mornings and less summer heat as fall takes an early grip.
