COLD X SHOWERS RAIN

Marquette, Mich. – Rain streaked across car windshields early Thursday as a chill wind off Lake Superior signaled that Upper Michigan’s late fall rhythm has arrived. Gusts near 25 mph and steady showers will hold through the morning, keeping roads damp and visibility low for the commute along U.S. 41 and M-28.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, scattered rain will linger into Thursday evening before tapering overnight as cooler, drier air filters in. Highs will struggle to reach the mid-40s, with northwest winds gusting over 20 mph at times. By Friday, skies begin to clear, and sunshine returns — though temperatures will stay brisk, barely touching the mid-40s across the northern U.P.

Travelers should watch for slick pavement early Thursday, especially on bridges and shaded stretches. The raw air will feel even colder along the lakefront, where wind chills may dip near freezing at dawn. Residents using space heaters or fireplaces are encouraged to check smoke detectors and avoid leaving heat sources unattended.

Friday brings calmer, clearer skies with patchy clouds and a light breeze. Highs will rise into the upper 40s by afternoon. Saturday looks brighter still, pushing into the low 50s with plenty of sun — perfect for late-season yard cleanup or setting up Halloween decorations before the next change in pattern.

Long-range trends hint at another cold push next week, and models are starting to tease at the Upper Peninsula’s first chance for light lake-effect snow. After all, once the winds turn north and the lake runs warm, flakes can’t be far behind.
