Gaylord, Michigan – Wet snow and a glaze of ice will turn roads slick across northern Michigan before sunrise, with wind gusts up to 40 mph reducing visibility through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. EST Wednesday for Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Montmorency and Alpena counties in northern Lower Michigan, along with Chippewa and Mackinac counties in eastern Upper Michigan. Snow totals of 3 to 8 inches are expected in the north, with 5 to 9 inches across eastern Upper Michigan. Ice accumulations up to one-tenth inch are possible, especially near the Lake Huron shoreline where snowfall may be locally higher.
Communities including Alpena, Cheboygan, Petoskey, Rogers City and Mackinac Island will see hazardous travel on U.S. 23, I-75 and M-32. Blowing snow may significantly cut visibility, and the weight of wet snow combined with gusty winds could down tree limbs and cause sporadic power outages.
Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible and prepare for sudden visibility drops during both the morning and evening commutes. Conditions improve late Wednesday night, but slick roads may linger.
