Michigan – Rain taps rooftops and runs along curbs this morning as strong gusts bend treetops across northern Michigan. The air feels heavy and unsettled, and conditions are expected to deteriorate as colder air surges in behind a powerful system.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Wind Advisory remains in effect today for much of northern Lower Michigan and parts of the eastern Upper Peninsula. Northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will gust as high as 50 mph at times. These winds may blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages.

Rain and snowmelt will lead to ponding on roads today, especially on secondary streets and low spots. As temperatures fall later, standing water may refreeze. Travel could become difficult this evening into early Saturday, particularly on M-32, I-75, and rural highways where visibility drops during bursts of snow.

Snow chances increase Saturday, with periods of steady snowfall developing through the afternoon and evening. Light accumulations are expected during the day, followed by heavier snow showers Saturday night. Several inches may accumulate in spots, though exact totals remain uncertain. Winds ease slightly but continue to cause drifting in open areas.

Sunday stays cold and mostly cloudy, with lingering snow showers possible. Highs struggle to reach the lower 20s, keeping roads slick and winter-like. Any melting during brief daylight hours may refreeze quickly after sunset, raising black ice concerns.

Looking ahead to early next week, conditions trend quieter but remain cold. Winter is firmly in place, even as daylight slowly increases across northern Michigan.

Drivers should plan ahead and secure loose outdoor items today. Seeing strong winds or snow where you are? Share what conditions look like near you.
