Marquette, Michigan – Snow is filling back in across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this morning, bringing the risk of slick roads and reduced visibility as moderate to heavy snowfall develops through the late morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, widespread snow will intensify by mid-morning Wednesday after a brief early lull. Snowfall will gradually taper from west to east later this afternoon, but steady accumulation is expected through much of the day. The highest totals are likely in north-central Marquette County, where elevation will help boost snowfall.

Snowfall totals across the Upper Peninsula vary widely. Areas near Marquette, Negaunee, and Ishpeming could see 4 to 8 inches in higher terrain, while communities along the Lake Superior shoreline and downtown Marquette may see closer to 2 to 5 inches due to slightly warmer lakeside conditions. Other U.P. communities including Houghton, Ontonagon, Munising, and Ironwood may receive 2 to 4 inches before the system weakens later today.

Travel may become difficult on U.S. 41, M-28, and M-553, particularly during heavier bursts of snow this morning into early afternoon. Road crews warn bridges and elevated surfaces could become snow-covered quickly.

Additional rounds of snow are possible later this week and into the weekend as new storm systems move through the Upper Great Lakes. Forecasters say winter weather alerts may continue to evolve as those systems develop.
