Marquette, Michigan – Blizzard conditions are rapidly intensifying across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today as a powerful winter storm tracks toward Lower Michigan, bringing the threat of feet of snow and near-zero visibility to parts of Upper Michigan by Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, a deepening low pressure system moving out of the central Plains is strengthening as it tracks east-northeast toward Lower Michigan tonight. Arctic air spilling south from Canada is fueling widespread heavy snowfall across the northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and the Great Lakes.

The most severe conditions are expected from northeastern Wisconsin into Upper Michigan, where several areas could see close to 2 feet of snow combined with strong, gusty winds. These winds will create blowing and drifting snow capable of producing whiteout conditions on major roadways including U.S. 41 and M-28.

Travel across the Upper Peninsula could become extremely dangerous Sunday and remain hazardous through Monday as bands of heavy snow continue wrapping around the intensifying storm. Emergency managers warn that prolonged whiteout conditions could shut down stretches of highway and strand motorists.

Even after the storm’s center moves into southeastern Canada Monday, strong winds and cold air circulating around the system will keep blowing snow across the region. Lake-effect snow bands may also redevelop downwind of the Great Lakes into Tuesday morning.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, charge electronic devices, and prepare for possible power outages as the storm peaks across the region. Additional warnings may be issued as the cyclone continues to strengthen.
