Gaylord, Michigan – Snow-covered and icy roads are expected to continue causing hazardous travel across western Chippewa County through Wednesday evening as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, additional snowfall of up to two inches is expected before the advisory expires at 10 p.m. EST. The most persistent lake-effect snow is forecast near Paradise, Whitefish Point, and Tahquamenon Falls, where localized bursts of snowfall may reduce visibility and quickly coat road surfaces.
Forecasters warn that roads will remain slick, with bridges and overpasses especially prone to icy conditions. Even light snowfall combined with cold pavement temperatures can lead to rapid accumulation, increasing the risk of spin-outs and slide-offs.
Several well-traveled routes in the area may be affected, including U.S. Highway 2, M-123, and nearby county roads serving Paradise and surrounding Lake Superior shoreline communities. Drivers traveling through forested or lakeshore areas may encounter sudden changes in visibility as lake-effect snow bands shift position.
Lake-effect snow events often create sharp contrasts in conditions over short distances. One area may experience steady snowfall while nearby locations remain mostly dry, making travel conditions unpredictable. Motorists are advised to remain alert for sudden reductions in visibility and traction.
The advisory remains in effect through the evening hours, overlapping with nighttime travel when temperatures will remain below freezing. Icy sidewalks, stairs, and driveways are also a concern for pedestrians, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Residents should use caution when walking outdoors and remain prepared for rapidly changing winter conditions until snowfall tapers off later tonight.
