Gaylord, MI – Drivers across northern Michigan are facing extremely hazardous conditions today as a powerful winter storm brings up to 18 inches of snow and intense 2-inch-per-hour snowfall rates along major highways including I-75 and US-131.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the heaviest lake-effect snow bands will continue through 7 p.m. Friday, impacting Antrim, Kalkaska, Crawford, Roscommon, and Otsego counties the most. These areas are expected to receive the storm’s highest totals, with 12 to 18 inches of additional snow likely. Surrounding counties may see 6 to 10 inches, while parts of the eastern Upper Peninsula will pick up 3 to 7 inches.

Travel is expected to be very treacherous, especially beneath the heaviest bands where rapid accumulation will quickly cover roads, producing whiteouts and sudden visibility drops. The most dangerous stretches include US-131 between Elmira and Fife Lake and I-75 from Waters (Exit 270) to Roscommon, where forecasters say snow may fall so quickly that plows will struggle to keep up.

Gusts up to 40 mph will worsen blowing snow, making it difficult for drivers to see lane markers, other vehicles, and roadway edges. The NWS warns that conditions may vary dramatically over short distances, with clear patches suddenly giving way to blinding snow.

Officials urge drivers to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the road should carry an emergency kit and keep headlights on to improve visibility for other motorists.

Road crews across northern Michigan are working continuously but say conditions may remain dangerous until late Friday as snow bands slowly weaken.
