Michigan – Snow streaks sideways across headlights this morning as wind pushes flakes low over the pavement. Roads look slushy, visibility drops fast, and winter driving demands full attention across the central Upper Peninsula.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Marquette County through mid-morning. Additional snowfall of 1 to 5 inches is expected, with the highest totals inland and at higher elevations away from Lake Superior. Winds gusting up to 40 mph are creating areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

Travel impacts are already developing. Slippery conditions may worsen quickly on US-41, M-28, and local roads, especially during the morning commute. Snow-covered lanes and drifting are likely in open areas. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and expect sudden whiteouts.

Rain earlier has added another concern. As temperatures hover near freezing, standing water may refreeze later today. That raises the risk for black ice, particularly on bridges, shaded roads, and untreated surfaces. Conditions may briefly improve later, but winter hazards will linger.

Snow chances return Saturday into Saturday night, with another round of accumulating snow possible. While totals remain uncertain, periods of steady snowfall could add several inches in spots. Winds ease somewhat, yet cold air locks in slippery conditions through Sunday. Highs remain stuck in the 20s, limiting any meaningful melting.

Looking ahead to early next week, snow showers remain possible at times. Winter continues to dominate northern Michigan, even as daylight slowly increases by late January.

Plan extra travel time today and check road conditions before heading out. Seeing heavy snow or slick roads where you are? Let us know what conditions look like near you.
