Michigan – Dangerous marine conditions are expected on Lake Huron as gale warnings and a heavy freezing spray warning remain in effect through Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, heavy freezing spray will impact the open waters of Lake Huron from 6 a.m. Thursday through 10 a.m. Saturday. Ice accumulation rates of 2 centimeters per hour or greater are possible, which can rapidly add weight to vessels and create hazardous operating conditions.
Gale warnings are also in effect, with strong northwest winds sustained at 25 to 30 knots and gusts reaching up to 35 knots. The strongest winds are expected across central Lake Huron through southern Lake Huron from Thursday morning into early Friday.
Forecasters say wave heights will build significantly, with waves reaching 7 to 10 feet and maximum waves as high as 14 feet. Wave conditions are expected to gradually decrease Friday as winds slowly diminish, though hazardous conditions may persist.
The combination of strong winds, high waves, and freezing spray poses a serious risk to commercial and recreational vessels. Ice accumulation can reduce vessel stability, impair steering, and increase the risk of capsizing.
Mariners are strongly advised to avoid travel on Lake Huron during the warning period and ensure vessels are properly secured in port. Those operating in nearshore areas should closely monitor conditions and be prepared for rapidly changing hazards.
The National Weather Service urges mariners to continue checking official forecasts and marine warnings at weather.gov/dtx for the latest updates.
